Homemade Rain Gauge
Grandpa’s idea for adding some interest to the rainy days. The preparation is very simple and in rainy days we go out to track it gets filled. Also enables practicing some basic or bit more complicated calculations.
The materials are:
- A bottle with as cylindrical shape as possible
- Scissors/Cutting knife
- Insulating tape/duct tape
- Water-resistant marker
- Ruler
- Small stones or any other weights
Empty the bottle and cut it on its top part. The cut may be sharp so you may want to wrap it with some insulating tape (not a must). Mark the baseline across the bottom part of the bottle all around it (about 5 centimeters above its bottom). Then, using the ruler, mark the scale intervals, placing 0 at the baseline and going upwards.
At the bottom of the bottle, place some stones to help it keep steady and fill with water up to the baseline. Take the upper part of the cut bottle, remove the cork and place up-side-down inside the bottom part, as a funnel.
Place the rain gauge outside where it will be properly exposed to rains, but safe from animals.
Dreidel Making
For Hanukkah, a simple and joyful activity of creating homemade dreidels.
The materials are:
- A carton board
- Scissors or knife
- A round object like a small bowl, plate or glass, for drawing circles
- Colors/stickers for decoration
- A pencil
Draw as many circles as you want dreidels on the carton board, cut them off, decorate them, stick a pencil at their center and spin.
